Saturday April 25th is Independent Bookstore Day. A time when we celebrate and support all the hard work our favorite small business bookstores do. There usually are special promotions and merchandise available that day. Several bookstores may even partner up to create a wider reaching promotion. They may even partner with other non-bookish and bookish small businesses alike to cross-promote. It’s all about shopping small and supporting the local businesses you love!
I ventured into Bel Air, Maryland to visit the newly opened bookstore named Odd Bird Bookshop. The owner, Jessica, is a wonderful human being who has chosen to create a beautiful, safe, and inclusive place for all of us book and bird nerds to flock to. She partnered with another local business, Cozy Cookies, to offer a free cookie to any patron that spent at least $25 at the bookshop, handed a 10% off coupon to anyone who arrived early and waited in line for the store to open that morning, and procured new and exclusive independent bookstore releases from publishers. It was a fun bookish time!
Perusing the cozy teal bookshelves of Odd Bird was exciting. Scanning spines and seeking out great finds, I walked away with three wonderful new-to-me books. My sister found for me a used copy of The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister, which I had been searching for lately. I nabbed one of the independent bookstore exclusive copies of Black AF History: The Un-whitewashed Story of America by Michael Harriot. And, my eldest picked out their latest copy of our favorite 90’s spooky series – Goosebumps Volume #31 Night of the Living Dummy II by R.L. Stine. We were very happy with our selections.
